This on-line course provides an overview of the investigations of the inappropriate use of seclusion and restraint in schools in the United States, along with the legislative action that has been taken at both the Federal and State levels to address the issue.  The course also highlights the implementation of new statutes in the State of Minnesota regarding restrictive procedures.

The Integration of Technology and Education

This on-line course provides an overview of the current use of technology in the public educational environment, primarily K-12.  It focuses on the role of the teacher, the impact of technology on student learning, and the future direction of technology from the perspective of the federal Department of Education.

Mindfulness in Education

This on-line course provides an overview of mindfulness practices, the science of mindfulness, classroom tips for teachers, and the relationship of mindfulness to learning.

Bullying: Establishing a Safe and Nurturing School Climate

This on-line course provides an overview of bullying behavior and the impacts on both those being bullied, but also the bully.  It reviews the various types of bullying behavior, the neuroscience surrounding bullying, and efforts to control and manage the impacts of bullying in the school environment.

Brain-based Learning

This on-line course first introduces you to the brain....its structure, its components and how it operates.  Brain-based learning is then explored by reviewing practices that are based on what scientists are learning about the brain.  Finally, the course presents various strategies that teachers can use in the classroom, including tools for engaging students in the learning process. 

Alternatives to Suspension

This on-line course presents issues related to the suspension of students in our public schools.  It explores ways to prevent suspension, as well as modified forms of suspension.  Finally, the course presents alternative approaches to suspension and restorative justice techniques being used to restore relationships that have been harmed due to a behavioral infraction.

Culturally Responsive Teaching

This course is designed to present the learner with the history of culturally relevant education theory and practice in American public schools as well as provide the learner with the most current schools of thought in providing all learners with quality educational opportunities and experiences.  In addition to theory this course will provide the learner with cultural pedagogy or strategies that can be implemented to immediately change attitudes and experiences in individual classrooms or building wide.

Project-based Learning

This on-line course provides an overview of the use of real-world projects as a key technique in the student learning process.  The risks and benefits of project-based learning, as well as implementation tips and pitfalls are presented. 

Reflective Statement

The State of Minnesota has added an additional requirement for license renewal in 2012. Beginning July 1, 2012, all individuals who were employed as a teacher during any part of the five-year period immediately preceding the license renewal must include "evidence of work that demonstrates professional reflection and growth in best teaching practices. The applicant must include a reflective statement of professional accomplishment and the applicant's own assessment of professional growth" in their license renewal materials. This "Reflective Statement" offering provides an easy guide for you to meet this requirement.

Early Warning Signs of Children's Mental Health Disorders

This on-line course provides an overview of common children's mental health disorders, along with suggestions for interventions that can be used in classroom settings.

This on-line course provides an overview of accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities or special language needs who may require adjustments in order to meet the Minnesota Academic Standards.  Adjustments may be needed in classroom instruction, classroom testing, when taking State assessments, and when participating in activities in the community and at home.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports

This on-line course provides an overview of PBIS, an evidence-based framework to improve student behavior by recording data, choosing areas of intervention, rewarding positive behavior, measuring the impact of interventions, and adjusting adult behavior based on outcome information.

Reading and The Brain

This on-line course provides an overview of how the student brain learns to read. There is an overview of several evidence-based reading models and programs that are effective for preschoolers through teens. A section is devoted to special needs learners.
